Understand Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

Temporomandibular joint disorders are usually referred to as TMD or TMJ. If you are suffering from head or neck pain, it may originate in your jaw or mouth. Something as small as a minor misalignment of the teeth or excess muscle tension can lead to this pain. At FIT Dental Center, we can correctly diagnose any TMD or TMJ issues you may be suffering from.

Because TMD headaches are caused by muscles in the jaw tensing up from posturing the jaw in an incorrect position for long periods of time, you may find that massage therapy alleviates your symptoms briefly. However, symptoms of a TMJ headache will inevitably return and often become more severe over time.

Common Symptoms of TMD/TMJ

  • Jaw pain
  • Neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms
  • Teeth clenching
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

Some Additional Symptoms of TMD

While a neuromuscular dentist can diagnose TMD, it is common for symptoms to include a mixture of jaw pain with one of the following:
  • Balance problems or vertigo
  • Clicking or popping jaw
  • Face pain
  • Headaches
  • Pressure above, behind, or below the eyes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Tooth wear
  • Upper back pain
If you suffer from jaw pain or one or more of the above symptoms, you may be suffering from TMD. Please contact Dr. Van Zyl at FIT Dental Center in Chattanooga, TN to learn how you can find relief from your symptoms.
